Daredevil #124 is a genuine turning point in the Bronze Age history of the title, serving simultaneously as the farewell issue for the Black Widow after a co-starring partnership that stretched across more than forty consecutive issues (from #81 onward), the debut of the armored vigilante-villain Copperhead (Lawrence Chesney), and the formal handoff of the series to writer-editor Marv Wolfman, whose run would go on to introduce Bullseye. The issue also marks the first appearance — in photograph cameo — of Blake Tower, the district attorney who would become a durable supporting character across Daredevil, The Amazing Spider-Man, and the broader Marvel legal landscape for decades. Taken together, it closes one prolonged chapter of Matt Murdock's life and snaps open several new ones simultaneously, making it one of the more structurally consequential single issues of mid-1970s Marvel.

In "In the Coils of the Copperhead!", Daredevil faces a personal rift when the Black Widow ends their relationship, just as a mysterious figure from the past—once a pulp hero of the 1930s—reemerges in modern-day New York to take justice into his own hands, hunting criminals with brutal precision. With Foggy’s political future hanging in the balance, Matt Murdock finds himself caught between old alliances and a new, unpredictable threat, all drawn in Gene Colan’s moody, expressive art and Klaus Janson’s sharp inks.

History

The issue emerged from an unusually tangled editorial transition: editor and writer Len Wein had inherited the title, grown dissatisfied with the direction Tony Isabella had set across the preceding five issues, and initially intended to write the book himself before instead handing both the writing and editorial duties to his friend Marv Wolfman beginning with this issue. The result is a split-script book — Wein scripted roughly the first half (pages 1–14) and Wolfman completed the remainder (pages 15–31) — with interior pencils by Gene Colan inked by Klaus Janson, whose debut on the title here would prove artistically significant given how central his ink style later became to the Frank Miller era. The cover was penciled by Gil Kane and inked by Frank Giacoia.
