As the middle chapter of the three-part 'Betrayal' arc (issues #8–10), it delivers the story's most dramatic turn: Interpol agent Sam Buchanan, one of the team's founding members, appears to betray the Redeemers by arresting Vicki Montesi and Louise Hastings at gunpoint on behalf of forces that may not have the heroes' interests at heart. The issue also functions as a carefully engineered on-ramp to the next Midnight Sons crossover, with Vicki receiving prophetic visions of Ghost Rider, Doctor Strange, and Modred facing death — foreshadowing the Midnight Massacre event that would roll through Marvel's supernatural line.

The series was conceived and written by Christian Cooper, then a young Marvel editor who moonlighted as a writer throughout the title's 16-issue run (October 1992 – January 1994). In a later interview, Cooper explained that the concept predated the Midnight Sons initiative entirely — his core idea being that the Darkhold's pages, once scattered to dilute Chthon's power, had never been fully recovered, and that the handful still at large could serve as self-contained horror premises delivered weekly by the sinister Darkhold Dwarf. Issue #9 was produced by the series' regular creative team at that point: writer Chris Cooper, penciller Rurik Tyler, inker Bob Downs, colorist Glynis Oliver, and letterer Phil Felix, under editors Hildy Mesnik and Bobbie Chase, with Tom DeFalco as editor-in-chief.
