Nov 1999 · Semic S.A. · 24 FRF

In Darkness #14, a 1999 Semic S.A. release with a 24 FRF cover price, Appolonia’s recovery from the Spear of Destiny’s shard sets off a deadly deception—her revenge on Jackie is a trap orchestrated by Sonatine. As the Angelus and the real Jackie clash in a climactic battle, the explosion leaves Appolonia and the Angelus vanished, Sonatine seemingly dead, and a shocking twist revealed: Sonatine has transferred his consciousness into Wengler’s body just before his own death. Written by Scott Lobdell and Sophie Viévard, with art by Joe Benitez and Clarence Lansang, and inked by a team including John Livesay and Joe Weems, this issue delivers a pulse-pounding escalation in the series’ escalating mystery. The cover, penciled by Benitez and inked by Weems, captures the moment of revelation with striking intensity.

Appolonia is restored to health from a shard of the Spear of Destiny. She thinks she has her revenge on Jackie, but it is really Sonatine impersonating Jackie. Then the Angelus and the real Jackie engage in a battle that ends with an explosion. When the smoke clears, Appolonia and the Angelus are gone, but Sonatine appears to be dead. But Sonatine has exchanged bodies with Wengler just before his body died, so it is really Wengler that is dead and Sonatine is impersonating Wengler.
