About this Issue

Detective Comics #943 opens 'The Victim Syndicate' arc, which introduces an entirely new villain team — First Victim, Madame Crow, Mister Noxious, Mudface, and Mute — whose collective premise (civilians permanently disfigured by Gotham's costumed war on crime who turn their rage on Batman himself) represented one of the sharpest moral challenges James Tynion IV posed during his DC Rebirth run. The issue also marks the Rebirth-era debut of Harper Row and Luke Fox back into active publication after months away, and it lands immediately in the emotional fallout of Tim Drake's apparent death — giving the entire ensemble a grief-soaked throughline that distinguished Tynion's Detective Comics from the rest of the Bat-office for its X-Men-style team focus. Coming directly off the 'Night of the Monster Men' crossover, this chapter reoriented the series around its broader cast and cemented Batwoman as a co-equal leader alongside Batman rather than a supporting player.

History

The issue was written by James Tynion IV and illustrated by penciller Álvaro Martínez Bueno and inker Raúl Fernández, with colors by Brad Anderson, letters by Marilyn Patrizio, and a cover by Jay Fabok and Anderson — the variant by Rafael Albuquerque. It published on October 26, 2016 with a December 2016 cover date, under editors Chris Conroy and group editor Mark Doyle, as part of DC's Rebirth initiative which had restored the original Detective Comics numbering at #934 after the New 52's 52-issue Vol. 2 interlude. Around the time of the issue's publication, Tynion and Eddy Barrows discussed the arc at New York Comic Con, confirming that Alvaro Martinez — newly DC-exclusive — would handle interior art for 'The Victim Syndicate,' while Barrows took a break; the arc was conceived as a direct emotional consequence of Tim Drake's removal from the series.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First (cameo) team appearance of the Victim Syndicate — comprising First Victim, Madame Crow, Mister Noxious, Mudface, and Mute — all civilians permanently harmed by the collateral chaos of Gotham's villain ecosystem who blame Batman rather than his rogues' gallery.
  • Each Victim Syndicate member's origin is tied to a specific Batman villain: First Victim to Batman himself, Madame Crow to Scarecrow, Mister Noxious to Poison Ivy, Mudface (Glory Griffin) to Clayface's chemicals, and Mute to the Joker's laughing gas.
  • Story title: 'The Victim Syndicate, Part One: I Saw the Devil.' Published October 26, 2016; cover-dated December 2016. Part of the DC Rebirth publishing initiative.
  • Written by James Tynion IV; interior art by Álvaro Martínez Bueno (pencils) and Raúl Fernández (inks); colors by Brad Anderson; cover by Jason Fabok and Brad Anderson; variant cover by Rafael Albuquerque.
  • Marks the DC Rebirth debut of Harper Row (Bluebird) and Luke Fox (Batwing), both of whom had been absent from DC publishing for several months prior to this issue.
  • The issue's narrative is framed around the team grieving Tim Drake's apparent death from the prior arc 'Rise of the Batmen,' and Batwoman's parallel emotional burden of her father Jacob Kane's imprisonment — positioning loss as the arc's central theme.
  • The opening scene pairs Batwoman with Renée Montoya — not Batman — to investigate a Victim Syndicate attack on Wayne Enterprises, continuing the series' deliberate effort to spotlight non-Batman characters as co-leads.
  • The arc beginning here (#943–947) was collected in the trade paperback Batman: Detective Comics Vol. 2: The Victim Syndicate, along with the 'Batwoman Begins' issues #948–949.
