“Brawl in the Family Part One "Darkly Dawns the Duck"”
About this Issue

This issue marks the first comic book appearance of Darkwing Duck (alias Drake Mallard), his co-pilot Launchpad McQuack, and arch-villain Taurus Bulba — transplanting Disney's then-brand-new Disney Afternoon superhero-parody series directly onto the page just as the television show was debuting. Published by Disney Comics in November 1991 and timed to coincide with the show's premiere on The Disney Afternoon and ABC, it launched the first-ever Darkwing Duck comic storyline, 'Brawl in the Family,' a four-part adaptation of the feature-length pilot 'Darkly Dawns the Duck.' The series represented Disney Comics' push to cross-market its animated properties in print, and although corporate upheaval cut that ambition short, the issue planted the seed for a Darkwing Duck comics legacy that would eventually stretch across four different publishers over three decades.

History

The mini-series was announced in a Disney Comics editorial in August 1991, with a run from November 1991 to February 1992. Writer-artist John Blair Moore — adapting a teleplay originally scripted by Tad Stones, Jan Strnad, and Jymn Magon (the show's creators) — handled both script and pencils, with George Wildman providing inks and Gaspar Saladino lettering. The series was conceived as a launchpad for an ongoing Darkwing Duck title that would feature original stories, following the same model as Disney Comics' TaleSpin mini-series; however, the 'Disney Implosion' — an internal collapse driven by mismanagement at Disney Comics — resulted in the cancellation of most titles before that longer series could begin, leaving Darkwing Duck comics consigned for the next several years to pages in Disney Adventures magazine.
