Doom Patrol #1
This volume kicks off the 2016 Doom Patrol series, collecting the first story arc of a surreal and mind-bending run that reimagines the team of misfit heroes. Written by Gerard Way with art by Nick Derington, it follows the bizarre adventures of characters like Crazy Jane, Negative Man, and Robotman as they confront strange threats that warp reality itself.
In "Crawling from the Wreckage," Grant Morrison and Richard Case launch a bold new era for the Doom Patrol as Cliff and Jane arrive at their Kansas City headquarters—only to discover it's overrun by Orqwith and the Scissormen. With the rest of the team already relocated to Rhode Island, the duo must flee across the country, only to find that the threat has followed them. Brian Bolland’s striking cover captures the series’ unsettling tone, setting the stage for a story where no place feels safe.
In "Crawling from the Wreckage," Cliff, confined to a mental hospital, is visited by Will Magnus, who introduces him to another patient, Kay Challis. Meanwhile, Niles outlines his vision for a new Doom Patrol to Joshua, while Larry, in a separate facility, finds an unexpected connection with the Negative Spirit and his nurse, Eleanor Poole.
In "Cautionary Tales," Niles visits Larry—now Rebis, a haunting fusion of Larry, Eleanor Poole, and the Negative Spirit—while the Scissormen launch their invasion, striking at the hospital where Cliff and Jane are trapped. The story unfolds with quiet dread, blending psychological tension and surreal horror as the Doom Patrol faces a threat that blurs the line between mind and monster.
In "Worlds in Collision," Cliff and Jane arrive at Doom Patrol headquarters in Kansas City only to discover the city overrun by Orqwith and the Scissormen—forcing them to flee to Rhode Island, where they soon realize the threat has followed them. The story unfolds as a tense, grounded chase across shifting realities, with the team’s survival hanging on their ability to stay one step ahead.
