Joe Callan and his friend Chick Pompey are racing stock cars at the Holdwyne Track when Pompey’s car crashes after a tire blowout. Callan rushes to rescue him from the burning wreckage, and after the ordeal, the three men—Callan, Pompey, and another mechanic—decide to shift from big, expensive stock cars to building and racing smaller, more affordable midget cars.

In the Regional Drag Championships, Lew Holman races his modified Dodge Coronet, known as the Hemi-Hurricane, to a stunning victory with a time of 9.93 seconds and a speed of 142 mph.
