After Egbert retrieves a hat blown away by the wind and returns it to a woman, he encounters a large black bird with an appetite that cannot be satisfied by caterpillars or berries. The bird continues pursuing Egbert, who attempts to escape and trick the bird while the creature remains determined to catch and eat him.
Egbert and the Count both spot a fifty-cent piece on the street and collide trying to grab it—sending the coin down a sewer and leaving them broke but inspired when they spot a State Fair pie-eating contest with a big prize. The scheming Count convinces reluctant Egbert that winning the contest is their ticket to easy money, but their plan to sneak into the fair leads to one comical mishap after another before they finally make it to the competition.
