Essential Conan #1
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeThis volume collects the first 25 issues of Marvel's Conan the Barbarian series, originally published from 1970 to 1972. It features the early adventures of Robert E. Howard's iconic Cimmerian warrior, as adapted by writer Roy Thomas and artists including Barry Windsor-Smith and John Buscema. Presented in Marvel's black-and-white Essential format, this edition covers Conan's initial encounters with sorcery, monsters, and rival kingdoms in the Hyborian Age.
In "The Coming of Conan!", Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith launch the legendary barbarian’s tale with a bold, bloody start: Conan rises as Captain of the guard in the city-state of Zahmahn and finds himself entangled in a dangerous web of love and betrayal. When Queen Fatima discovers Conan with the servant girl Yaila, the two are condemned to die at the hands of the Dweller in the Dark—only to survive and turn the tables in a shocking twist. With Zahmahn bound by tradition to be ruled by a woman, Conan’s choice sets the stage for a new reign. The cover by John Buscema captures the moment’s high stakes with classic flair.

Conan becomes Captain of the royal guard in the small city-state of Zahmahn as well as the lover of Queen Fatima. When the Queen catches Conan with the servant girl Yaila in a delicate situation, she leaves them in the dungeon to be devoured by the Dweller in the Dark. They manage to escape, however, and Conan throws the Queen to the monster. According to tradition, Zahmahn can only be ruled by a female sovereign, so Conan nominates Yaila as the new queen.
