Joan's neighbor Brenda shows Joan a photo of her cousin Jerry, and Joan is immediately attracted to him, though he lives across the country. Some years pass before they meet for the first time, but Joan hasn't allowed herself to become interested in anyone else while she waited for Jerry. They go on some dates but Jerry warns her that he isn't the marrying kind.
