After robbing the Sanford Bank, Payne and Wagner are pursued by police and sheriffs; Wagner is killed during the escape, and Payne is tracked through the woods by law enforcement. Both Payne and Wagner were captured on the same day in January 1933 and executed in the North Carolina gas chamber on July 1, 1933.
