“The Mark of the Monster”

In "The Mark of the Monster," Frankenstein's Monster—awakened from a frozen tomb—rises to battle the X-Men, his icy clash with Iceman culminating in a shocking explosion. Written by Roy Thomas and illustrated by Don Heck with inks by George Tuska and letters by Artie Simek, this 1969 annual reimagines the classic creature as an alien android meant for peace, its rampage sparked by a misjudgment of the X-Men’s colorful costumes. The cover by George Tuska captures the eerie, frozen spectacle of the monster’s awakening.

Frankenstein's Monster has been found frozen in ice. The ice melts, the monster awakens and he battles the X-Men. The monster prevails but the X-Men come back for round two! The monster explodes after Iceman sheathes it in ice. It turns out that the monster was an android created by an alien race who was meant to be an ambassador of peace. The android malfunctioned and became a menace. The pursuing aliens left its body in an icy tomb. It attacked the X-Men because of their colorful costumes. Xavier muses - "We'll never know how Mary Shelley learned any of this - but perhaps it's just as well!"
