Cpl. Whitey Resmen, a grumbling infantryman assigned to the dangerous night runs of the Red Ball Express, is forced to take a risky daylight convoy when his truck is hit. In March 1961, Joe Carr, a civilian now living in Wisconsin, returns to the Philippines with an old Army buddy and finds himself confronting a man who once tried to kill him—this time, a wounded Filipino employee shot with a Japanese Nambu automatic, leading to a tense standoff where Carr recognizes the shooter’s gun and the moment of recognition echoes a past act of mercy. The man, a former Japanese officer, recalls the moment Carr spared his life in 1945, and though the situation is fraught, Carr chooses forgiveness over retribution.

Brig. Gen. Aurelius C. Earley, known as "Surly Earley," takes command of a demoralized unit dubbed "Grandma's Girls" after their previous leader's death and the division's cowardly retreat at Normandy. Determined to turn them into fighters, he subjects them to relentless drills and harsh discipline, earning their hatred but slowly forging them into soldiers through sheer endurance. As they face the brutal realities of combat in winter France, their fear gives way to pride, and the once-shamed unit earns a fierce reputation on the battlefield.
