The anthology opens with "Canteen Kate," in which a woman at a military canteen expresses concern about Major Herringbone's harsh training regimen involving foxhole digging in rocky terrain. In "Biff Barnes and Smokey Walsh in Flying High," the two Marines receive a special pass for twelve hours of leave but are forced to hide under a net near Sergeant Kennedy's position; later, they discover an ammunition dump hidden beneath a hill and must retrieve it from inside a cave while dealing with enemy soldiers and broken communications.

Flying High

When Biff Barnes and Smokey Walsh accept a pass to town, they're intercepted by what they think is a friendly officer—but it's actually a cover for enemy spies trying to reach the front lines. After a struggle leaves their jeep wrecked, the two Marines find themselves captured and shuttled by helicopter toward enemy territory, forced to think fast if they want to make it back to base alive. With a little help from Sergeant Kennedy's lessons on camouflage and a whole lot of quick thinking, they'll manage a daring escape—but the real price of their adventure might be more uncomfortable than they bargained for.

The Big Blast

Leatherneck Jack Rogers and his buddy Monte volunteer for a dangerous behind-enemy-lines mission to locate a Communist ammunition dump and destroy it. With intelligence pointing to the target's location, the two marines must use cunning and nerve to infiltrate the enemy position, gather intel from captured soldiers, and plant the charges needed to complete their assignment.
