“Reckless Redhead!”

"Reckless Redhead!" from First Love Illustrated #14 (1951) captures a fleeting moment of teenage recklessness and redemption, as teen sisters Lila and Francine, aged 15 and 16, step out of line with a pair of sailors on leave—only to face a sobering moment of honesty when they admit their true ages. Bob Powell’s expressive art brings the emotional tension to life, while Al Avison’s cover perfectly encapsulates the story’s mix of danger and innocence.

Teenaged sisters Lila and Francine sneak out and pick up Len and Ernie, two sailors on leave, but balk at having sex with them, and admit their ages (15 and 16). Calling them “cheap and common and dumb,” the sailors tell them to leave, then repent and safely escort them home. Len and Ernie turn out to be decent fellows and prove to be satisfactory dates for the sisters at the local ice cream shop.
