Part one of the historical series "How America Grew" follows the Freeman family across generations as they struggle for freedom and build better lives in America. The opening depicts colonial-era conflict with Native Americans and the threat of invasion, followed by scenes from 1775 showing a printer named Freeman caught between loyalists and revolutionaries during the American Revolution, ultimately choosing to join Washington's Army. The narrative then jumps to 1869, where Freeman's descendant Jim Freeman considers business opportunities in the expanding West, specifically a railroad venture supplying settlers, ultimately purchasing life insurance to protect his family as he pursues this entrepreneurial risk.
