“Death in the Desert”

"Death in the Desert" delivers a tense, high-stakes chapter in the G.I. Joe saga, where captured Joes face a grim fate in the desert wastelands of Trucial Abysmia. Written by Larry Hama and illustrated by John Statema, with inks by Tim Dzon and Randy Emberlin, the issue builds suspense as a misinterpreted order from Cobra Commander leads to tragedy—only for the survivors to fight back with a desperate call for help. The cover by Lee Weeks captures the moment’s intensity, setting up a rescue mission that’s already too late for most.

As the captured Joes ponder their fate in Trucial Abysmia, Xamot places a call to Cobra Commander, who tells him to get rid of the captured Joes, meaning release them, but he misunderstands the Commander's order and instead has most of them killed by a SAW-Viper. The other surviving captured Joes give payback as Breaker sends an emergency message to the Pit while escaping, which causes Hawk to send 3 Joes to rescue them, but they are sent too late as only 3 Joes are still alive: Duke, Falcon, and Cross Country. To be continued...
