G.I. Joe, a Real American Hero [25th Anniversary Action Figure Reprint Series] #86

May 1989 · Hasbro · [none] (see notes)
“... Not Fade Away!”

In the 1989 issue "... Not Fade Away!", the modern G.I. Joe team teams up with the original G.I. Joe—revealed in a moment of quiet revelation—to stop Cobra, disguised as Iron Grenadiers, from seizing a government-developed laser defense system. With the fate of the system hanging on stolen data disks carried by a drone, the Joe team springs into action, culminating in a tense, decisive strike. Written by Larry Hama and illustrated by Marshall Rogers, with inks by Randy Emberlin and colors by Bob Sharen, the story unfolds with the weight of legacy, as the original Joe reveals his identity and history, leaving the team to reflect on what it truly means to be a Joe. The cover, a dynamic collaboration by Ron Wagner, Greg Horn, and Bob McLeod, captures the moment with striking precision.

The Joe team hooks up with the original G.I. Joe to keep Cobra (disguised as Iron Grenadiers) from taking over a laser defense system that he developed for the government. Cobra steals the disks containing the needed information to control the defense system, but Joe saves the day when he targets the drone carrying the disks, and fires a laser to disintegrate it. He then tells the Joe team he was the original G.I. Joe, and Jane was his nurse when Hawk wants to make him an honorary member, to which Muskrat responds he always thought the original team was bigger than just the two of them.
