G.I. Joe, a Real American Hero #82

Jan 1989 · Marvel · 1.00 USD; 1.25 CAD; 0.50 GBP
“Weeding Out”

In "Weeding Out," three newly minted G.I. Joe recruits are thrust into their first mission mere hours after surviving brutal basic training, racing to intercept Cobra’s theft of a high-value weapons cache. With precision and grit, Lightfoot foils the escape by planting a timed mine on the fleeing truck, sending both truck and Cobra chopper spiraling into the sky in a fiery explosion—while uncovering a shocking twist: the Vipers they fought were actually Iron Grenadiers in disguise. Written by Larry Hama and illustrated by Marshall Rogers and Don Hudson, with inks by Randy Emberlin and colors by Bob Sharen, this issue captures the tension and camaraderie of the Joe team in a story that’s as sharp as it is suspenseful. The cover, by Ron Wagner and Bob McLeod, perfectly captures the moment of explosive action.

Three new recruits survive the ordeal of basic training, G.I. Joe style, and are sent on their first mission before they have barely had time to catch their breath to stop Cobra from stealing a weapons cache. Lightfoot stops them when he plants a time delayed mine onto the escaping truck before it is airlifted out by a Cobra chopper, and both truck and chopper explode in air; he also finds out that the Vipers were really Iron Grenadier troopers in disguise during the battle.
