G.I. Joe, a Real American Hero #92
In "Thunderclap," the G.I. Joe team splits into two missions: one testing a new weapon for El Presidente in Punta Del Mucosa, while another races to rescue captured Joes and surviving Oktober Guard members from El Jefe’s forces in Sierra Gordo. With Voltar’s invasion of the region threatening to escalate, both teams push forward—success hinges on timing, precision, and a weapon that must be used without triggering a larger conflict. Written by Larry Hama and illustrated by Mark Bright, with inks by Randy Emberlin and colors by Bob Sharen, this 1989 issue delivers high-stakes action with a tense, grounded edge. The cover by M. D. Bright and Randy Emberlin captures the moment’s urgency, a striking visual that mirrors the story’s balance of strategy and danger.

As one group of Joes test the new Thunderclap weapon for El Presidente in Punta Del Mucosa, another group of Joes are out to rescue captured members of both their team and the surviving Oktober Guard (most of whom were killed) from El Jefe's forces in Sierra Gordo as Voltar invades to reclaim the country for Cobra. Both teams are successful, as the the new weapon is fired at Cobra forces in pursuit from Del Mucosa towards Sierra Gordo, without sparking any type of international incident.
