"Desert Captives," a Buck Desmond tale by Dick Kraus, follows the cowboy as he pursues outlaw Avery Porter and his gang across the desert after they murder Sheriff Tom Carson, struggling to stay awake while guarding his three captives on the journey to turn them over to the law. "Musketeers of the West," set at a frontier hotel, depicts Lariat Chief Thunderhead and his companions encountering a card cheat named Loco, who they expose before Gabby Hayes arrives in town and discovers phony money in circulation, leading him to break free from an angry mob and track down the counterfeiting operation to a barn.
