“Monsters Like Us”

In "Monsters Like Us," Gambit shadows the mysterious Courier to a tense meeting with the eccentric Crew ASKEW, where a dangerous new weapon enters the fray—a gas capable of total control. When the Mengo brothers unleash it to seize power, Gambit intervenes, snatching the canister and fleeing through Onslaught Alley, where he encounters the enigmatic mutant Quiet Bill, whose ability to open dimensional rifts adds a new layer of unpredictability. Written by Fabian Nicieza and illustrated by Steve Skroce, with cover art by Skroce, this 1999 issue delivers a sharp, character-driven thriller that deepens Gambit’s solo journey.

Gambit secretly tracks the Courier to a meeting with the offbeat Crew ASKEW. Courier is interrupted in his presentation by the Pelican who offers to sell the Crew a gas that totally controls anyone subjected to it. The Mengo brothers burst in and set off the gas to incapacitate the Crew. Gambit takes this as his cue to swing in and take the canister to keep it out of the Mengo's hands. As Gambit evades the Mengos down Onslaught Alley, he meets Quiet Bill, a mutant that opens portals to other dimensions.
