Människorna drivs bort från Mörkerlandet av Hertigen. Några få människor klarar sig undan genom att förklä sig och däribland är Gaspard och maskmakaren Satrape. Både Hertigen och Satrape planerar oberoende av varandra att mörda Unge Kungen, skylla mordet på Gaspard och själva ta makten i Mörkerlandet. Någon lyckas till slut mörda Unge Kungen och Gaspard hittas på mordplatsen med en dolk i handen.
