“Bullet-Proof”

"Bullet-Proof" sees Gene Autry tracking train robbers into the desert, where he crosses paths with Jo seeking her prospector uncle Lonesome. After being wounded and losing his horse Champ, Gene is tended to by Beth, and together they follow clues through a sandstorm to find water and Lonesome’s cabin—only to discover a corpse buried in the snow. When Lonesome returns, he reveals the man was a former outlaw he’d killed, and that he’s struck uranium, planning to sell his claim and retire. Guided by Lonesome to the bandits’ hideout over the cliff, Gene descends just as the outlaw leader makes his move—only for Lonesome to save him at the last moment. Written by Gaylord Du Bois and illustrated by Nicholas Firfires, this 1950 Dell adventure blends desert survival, hidden pasts, and a quiet moment of connection between Gene and Beth. Cover by Nicholas Firfires.

Gene tracks train robbers into the desert and a dead-end. He finds Beth seeking her prospector uncle Lonesome. Bandits wound Gene and steal Champ; Beth nurses him. They follow her uncle's burro, survive a sandstorm, and find water. At Lonesome's cabin, they find a corpse and bury it. Lonesome returns and explains it was a badman he killed before. Wounded, he went for a doc. He struck uranium, and will sell the claim and retire. He leads Gene to the hide-out over the cliff, and Gene heads down. Lonesome saves Gene in the nick of time. Gene muses if not for Beth he'd not have closed the case.
