About this Issue

Ghost Rider #1 (May 1990) marks one of the most consequential relaunches in Marvel's early 1990s publishing history, introducing Danny Ketch as a brand-new Spirit of Vengeance — a darker, more mysterious figure than his predecessor Johnny Blaze, whose own series had gone silent seven years earlier. The issue established a grittier urban mythology rooted in Brooklyn street crime, family tragedy, and moral ambiguity that distinguished the Ketch era from the daredevil stuntman tone of the original run. Its immediate commercial success proved that Marvel's horror-adjacent characters could carry a flagship ongoing, and the series quickly became the anchor of the 'Midnight Sons' line of interconnected supernatural titles. The debut also introduced the Penance Stare — a signature power with no precedent in the Blaze era — cementing a new visual and narrative identity that influenced how the character has been depicted in every medium since, including film.

"Life's Blood" kicks off a fresh chapter of Ghost Rider with a chilling Halloween Eve twist: Dan, visiting Houdini’s grave with his sister Barb, stumbles into a violent clash between Deathwatch’s assassins and Kingpin’s enforcers. When Barb is shot, Dan flees with her and discovers a motorcycle with a pulsing gas cap—transforming him into the flaming Ghost Rider. As a stolen briefcase containing three mysterious canisters falls into the hands of a local gang, both Kingpin and Deathwatch launch a deadly hunt to reclaim it, setting the stage for a high-stakes chase across the city’s shadowed streets. Written by Howard Mackie and brought to life by Javier Saltares’ dynamic art, with inks by Mark Texeira, colors by Gregory Wright, and letters by Michael Heisler, the cover by Saltares captures the eerie intensity of the night.

History

Howard Mackie, then a member of Marvel's editorial staff, championed the Ghost Rider property after years of neglect; it was Executive Editor Mark Gruenwald who encouraged Mackie to stop talking about the character and formally pitch a revival series. Mackie cited writer J.M. DeMatteis's late run on the original book as a personal touchstone, and he deliberately designed Danny Ketch as a younger, more tragic figure — an ordinary Brooklyn kid rather than a motorcycle stuntman — to distinguish the new series from the Blaze mythology. Penciler Javier Saltares provided the visual redesign for the launch, with inker Mark Texeira's heavy, high-contrast finishes giving the book its distinctive look; Texeira would eventually take over full art duties, becoming closely identified with the character. The series was edited by Bobbie Chase under Tom DeFalco's tenure as Editor-in-Chief.
