The Gunmaster story "The Crossbow War" depicts a conflict in which citizens of Snakepit defend their town by firing light crossbows equipped with gunpowder-laden projectiles at heavily armed killers. Gunmaster, wearing his special light armor beneath his shirt to protect against slugs, pursues the attackers and confronts an adversary, discovering that a .44 caliber bullet intended for his heart was stopped by his protective gear. The villain Kacee Dredd is revealed to be behind the attack, and Gunmaster pursues him to stop the threat before Dredd can deliver the fatal shot.
