Hercules: Twilight of a God #4 is the closing chapter of Bob Layton's decades-long Earth-829 future-Hercules saga, delivering the final fates of nearly every character he introduced beginning with the 1982 Prince of Power miniseries — one of Marvel's earliest limited series. The issue carries two significant first appearances within the Earth-829 continuity: Hercules reborn as Cosmos, Bringer of Worlds, and Juno assuming the mantle and power cosmic of a new Silver Surfer. Together, those transformations give the story a mythic, cyclical resonance — the demigod who once made Galactus laugh now sacrifices himself to restore the World-Devourer and, in so doing, becomes something greater than a hero. Layton originally pitched this story to Marvel roughly a decade before it was published, under the working title Hercules: The End; the proposal sat dormant until editor Mark Paniccia, energized in part by the enthusiasm of Incredible Hercules writers Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente, brought Layton back and greenlit the project in 2009. The series was announced for a June 2010 release and ran August–November 2010 as a four-issue miniseries, with Layton writing and inking over breakdowns by his longtime collaborator Ron Lim — the same creative partnership that had defined the visual language of Layton's earlier cosmic Hercules work. The entire miniseries was subsequently collected in a trade paperback (ISBN 978-0-7851-3546-3), making all four chapters continuously available.
