As Artaban rescues the slave girl Roxana from Hyrkanian raiders, she persuades him to spare Prince Teyaspa, imprisoned in the fortress of the Zaporoskan warlord Gleg. With help from Vinashko, a former Yuetshi chief, Conan infiltrates the castle through a hidden passage, confronting Artaban in a deadly clash. After the fall of Gleg and the deaths of several key figures, Roxana, broken by fate, takes the lives of Teyaspa and herself. Left alone and pursued by unearthly horrors, Conan barely escapes—only to find his crew has vanished.
