High School Confidential Diary #4
In "They Didn't Understand," Joan Harden navigates the pressures of high school popularity with quiet determination. Inspired by a late-night TV show, she transforms her confidence and charm, only to find that the attention she gains comes with a reputation she never asked for. Written by an unknown hand and illustrated with crisp, expressive detail by Joe Sinnott, with inks by Vince Colletta, this 1960 Charlton gem captures teenage vulnerability with sincerity. The cover, by Dick Giordano and Vince Colletta, perfectly frames Joan’s inner conflict in a moment of quiet reflection.

Joan Harden wants to be popular, but doesn't feel as pretty as the other girls. One night a TV show suggests that a plain girl can be noticed by the boys if they do the best with what they have physically and develop a vivacious, feminine character. Joan does this and boys start to notice. But she gets a reputation as a fun-girl, easy to kiss by anybody. When Joan meets Paul, she feels differently about him than the other boys. But Paul leaves Joan when he finds out about her reputation.
