In the rugged hills near Twin River, a fugitive named Bud Mason seeks refuge in the jailhouse, turning himself in to escape a deadly gang he once betrayed. Hopalong Cassidy, disguised as Bud to lure the gang into a trap, must outwit them before they realize the ruse—and before they claim their next victim.

Hill Billy boasts he’s the greatest fisherman around, but when his friends tease him for catching nothing, he claims he did land a fish—too small for a great fisherman like him to keep. To prove his point, he says he had help throwing it back into the lake, leaving his friends stunned.

Hopalong Cassidy encounters a scheming con artist who claims to be a wealthy Southern gentleman, using exaggerated Southern mannerisms and fabricated tales of cotton-picking and noble lineage to swindle him. The impostor’s increasingly absurd boasts—ranging from southern exposure to varicose veins in his family—only deepen the humor as Hopalong sees through the ruse, yet still hands over five dollars with a mix of exasperation and amusement.

Hopalong Cassidy arrives in Twin River to find the post office mail revealing a threatening letter meant for him, hinting at a plot to eliminate him. After narrowly escaping an ambush and discovering a fake guard setup, he uses the bandits’ own deception against them, luring them into a trap at the deserted fortress where he plans to expose their leader.

Goofis is convinced that burying a cat will cure the wart on her hand, leading to a frantic scene where she tries to bury a terrified cat. Pistol Packing Patty intervenes, skeptical of the superstition, and delivers a deadpan punchline that undercuts Goofis’s belief — all while the cat meows in protest.

Mesquite is forced into a town play after refusing to act as a bear, only to flee into the woods when he realizes the role is no longer his. Mistaking his own shadow for a real bear and later encountering a female bear who mistakes him for a mate, he panics and tries to escape—only to realize too late that he’s been running from himself in a bear costume.
