Aspiring opera singer Della dates lawyer George but is determined to “save my love for someone who could help my career by giving me financial backing.” Della develops lung problems and has to go to a sanitarium, although she doesn’t have money to pay for it. Della and doctor Bert fall in love, but he says he’s going to marry wealthy Helen, whose money can help his career. Della realizes this is how she treated George and tracks him down: he’s the one who secretly paid for her medical treatment. Della says she’ll marry him even though he isn’t rich.
