The issue features a story loosely adapted from the fairy tale "The Town Musicians of Bremen." Jack encounters a one-eared man who can hear everything in the world, and the two travel together meeting a donkey, dog, and cat—all elderly animals facing death at their masters' hands. The four join forces and head to Bremen to become musicians, but Jack eventually seeks training in "shuddering" at an enchanted castle. After Peter (Jack) accepts the king's challenge to spend three nights in the haunted castle to win the princess's hand, he battles demons and magical creatures including black cats and dogs breathing fire, ultimately vanquishing the supernatural threats and claiming his reward.
