This volume introduced German-language readers to 'The Justice Society Returns!', the 1999 DC crossover that formally restored the Justice Society of America — comics' original superhero team, born in the Golden Age 1940s — to active standing in the unified DC Universe after years of post-Crisis ambiguity. By packaging the first half of that nine-issue event in a single affordable trade-paperback format, Dino Verlag brought a pivotal piece of DC continuity to a European audience that had no easy access to the scattered single-issue originals. The event itself directly seeded the long-running JSA ongoing series by Geoff Johns and David S. Goyer, making this volume a narrative gateway to one of DC's most celebrated team books of the early 2000s. In "Hüter der Zeit," Hourman finds himself ensnared in a dangerous conspiracy when a spy ring uses him to summon the supernatural Stalker. After escaping to warn the JSA, he must rally the team as Stalker closes in—forcing him to create seven disciples in a desperate bid to buy time.
In "Fair Play," the Flash and Mister Terrific are thrown back into the chaos of World War II as they race to save lives during the bombing of Dresden. When a mysterious enemy with the power to absorb and redirect explosions emerges, the two heroes must rely on speed, strategy, and a shared sense of justice to stop the attack—before the city is lost to fire and fury.

The source material collected here is the first half of 'The Justice Society Returns!', a nine-issue crossover DC published across a set of one-shots bearing Golden Age comic-book titles — All Star Comics, Adventure Comics, All-American Comics, and others — in 1999. James Robinson championed the project at DC after years of lobbying for a JSA revival, ultimately enlisting co-writers including Mark Waid, Geoff Johns, Chuck Dixon, Tom Peyer, and Ron Marz, with art by a large rotating roster that included Chris Weston, Russ Heath, Stephen Sadowski, and Michael Lark. Dino Verlag split the nine-issue event across two consecutive Sonderbände — #15 ('Band 1: Der Beginn einer neuen Ära') and #16 ('Band 2: Die Wiedergeburt einer Legende') — and re-edited at least one cover for the German edition. The Sonderband series itself closed in January 2001, making these late-run volumes among the last publications Dino produced before the line ended.
