JLA / Witchblade #1

Jan 2001 · DC · 5.95 USD; 9.25 CAD

JLA / Witchblade #1 (2001) brings together two iconic forces in a story that begins with Kenneth Irons hiring Lex Luthor to steal The Witchblade from Sara Pezzini, leaving her wounded and fleeing through Gotham. With Barbara Gordon’s help, Sara is taken to the Watchtower for treatment, where Martian Manhunter’s attempt to understand her ordeal plunges him into her memories of first claiming the weapon. As the powerful artifact begins to influence Barbara, Huntress, and Wonder Woman, Superman’s hope for a solution is met with the sobering truth: The Witchblade is a burden Sara must carry alone. Written by Len Kaminski and illustrated by Mark Pajarillo, with inks by Walden Wong and colors by John Kalisz and Heroic Age, the cover by Pajarillo and Wong captures the intensity of this crossover’s opening chapter.

Kenneth Irons hires Luthor to gain The Witchblade from Sara Pezzini. As a result, Sara is badly wounded, forced into flight in Gotham City, and goes to Barbara Gordon for help. Barbara gets Sara to the Watchtower for medical treatment. Martian Manhunter attempts to probe Sara's mind and undergoes the experiences of Sara first gaining The Witchblade. Barbara, Huntress, and Wonder Woman are taken over by The Witchblade as it seeks the most powerful host. When Superman suggests they’ll find a way to help Sara, Martian Manhunter says that The Witchblade is a burden Sara must bear alone.
