År 1648: Johan tar anställning som skeppspojke på ett handelsfartygpå väg mot Guldkusten. Ombord trakasseras han av underskepparen och när han en dag ger igen döms han till kölhalning. Johan rymmer och träffar Tristão, som hjälper Johan att gömma sig. Tristão behöver Johans hjälp för att söka efter en guldskatt. Johan inser att skatten inte är kvar, men Tristâo tror honom inte. De hamnar i klorna på holländaren Huybert van Effen som också är ute efter guldet. Johan och Tristão rymmer. Under flykten blir Tristão uppäten av krokodiler, men Johan undkommer och halvt avsvimmad hittas han av Akim Kwami.
