John Wayne rides with the state police to stop a criminal operation on a tropical island called Devil's Island, where prisoners attempt escape by boat during a storm. When Wayne and his companions land on the island, they encounter the Green Death—a dangerous giant grass that threatens to trap them. The story culminates in Hong Kong at the Black Peacock establishment, where Wayne searches for a missing girl named Tala while dealing with criminal operatives and their schemes. Also included is a Memphis Smith, Private Eye story titled "Wedding Belle" by Donald George, in which the narrator, a cynical private investigator, becomes entangled with the beautiful and mysterious Louise, who pursues him relentlessly despite his resistance to romance.
