When John Wayne drifts into a rodeo town and spots a notorious killer horse called Suicide, he realizes it's the Wild One—a mustang stallion he once befriended in the Arizona backcountry before betraying the creature to save a struggling ranch. What unfolds is a grueling test of nerve and redemption as man and beast confront their shared past in the arena.
When a blizzard strands a train high in the Rockies, John Wayne finds himself trapped with fellow passengers Mrs. Carruthers and her young son Jimmy—until a gang of escaped convicts arrives posing as a rescue party, taking Jimmy hostage as insurance against pursuit. Wayne sets out alone into the snowy wilderness with his rifle and snowshoes, determined to track down the criminals and bring the boy back safely before nightfall.
John Wayne tracks down the bushwackers who gunned down his sidekick in Echo Gulch, using clever detective work—a thrown horseshoe—to identify them in the town of Los Siesta. When he corners the hot-headed Denem twins in the gulch where the crime took place, a moonlit confrontation unfolds with an unexpected twist that leaves John Wayne with a story the saloon crowd won't quite believe.
