Justice League of America #171

Oct 1979 · DC · 0.40 USD
“The Murderer Among Us: Crisis Above Earth-One!”

In *Justice League of America* #171 (1979), the annual joint gathering of the Justice League and Justice Society takes a chilling turn when Mr. Terrific—returning from retirement—announces he’s tracking his long-time foe, the Spirit King, with cryptic urgency. Before he can elaborate, a sudden breach tears through the satellite, and his body is discovered floating in the void, leaving the heroes shaken and the mystery unresolved. Written by Gerry Conway and illustrated by Dick Dillin, with inks by Frank McLaughlin and colors by Jerry Serpe, the issue’s cover by Dick Dillin and Dick Giordano captures the tension with a stark, haunting image of the floating corpse.

At the annual Justice League of America-Justice Society of America get-together, Mr. Terrific claims that he's come out of retirement to track his old enemy the Spirit King, but he won't say any more until the right moment. Baffled by Mr. Terrific's odd behavior, the heroes try to proceed with the event, but it isn't long before there is a hole blown in the side of the side of the satellite and Mr. Terrific's body is found floating in the vacuum of space.
