Two quirky, mismatched creature-travelers — one tall and gangly, the other small and wide-brimmed — peer out from a misty shoreline in shades of cool blue and grey, with a distant castle rising from the water behind them. The subtitle Le Bois des Maîtres ("The Wood of the Masters") promises a journey into something mysterious, and the brooding, fog-draped atmosphere delivered by J.-M. Michaud and Alan Simon sets a wonderfully eerie tone right from this opening volume. Casterman's 2013 fantasy series Les Enfants de la Nuit gets off to an atmospheric start here, blending gentle whimsy with something just a little unsettling.
