Katie’s boss Laine asks her to take over the bookkeeping department of his company and keep two sets of books, “one for the tax people and the other for ourselves!” She will be well paid, which will allow her to marry Jim sooner. Laine sets up dummy corporations and pays Katie to be listed as president. Jim urges Katie to quit and she agrees, but decides to keep working a bit longer to achieve her savings goal. Jim finds out and breaks up with her due to her “lies, deceit, dishonesty.” Katie turns herself in to the authorities and is sentenced to probation. Jim returns and they reconcile.
