Brett Marlowe investigates the murder of Ralph Trenton after the man’s nephew, Brett Marlowe’s client, is accused. While probing a ruined mill linked to a mysterious scarecrow, the detective is ambushed by a railway porter who tries to kill him, only to be defeated in a fall down a grain chute. The discovery of a hidden forger’s den in the mill’s cellar suggests the scarecrow is part of a larger conspiracy.
