Little Orphan Annie #4
In "Bucking the World," Little Orphan Annie takes on a new life in a small town, working her way from waitress to part-owner of a local cafe—where her sharp ears pick up whispers that lead to a stolen train robbery. When she helps the police recover the loot, she’s captured by a gang and whisked back to the city, only to return to the orphanage just as it catches fire. Written and illustrated by Harold Gray, this 1929 issue captures Annie’s resilience with quiet determination and a touch of grit, all rendered in the distinctive hand of its creator.

Annie sells newspaper strips until the family she is helping is forced to move to the country for health reasons. In a small town she becomes first a waitress and later a part-owner in a small cafe. At the cafe she hears enough gossip to discover the location of the loot stolen from a train. When she helps the cops recover the loot and arrest those responsible, she is captured by a gang and taken back to the city. She escapes, and is returned to the orphanage, which catches fire.
