Jane, her father, and Clayton go to Wisconsin to Clayton's new home. They are pursued by Canler, holder of Professor Porter's loans. He demands to marry Jane. The party becomes trapped by a forest fire but are rescued by Tarzan. Tarzan forces Canler to disavow Jane. Clayton proposes to Jane and she accepts. Tarzan receives a telegram informing him that his fingerprints have proven that he is the Greystoke heir, not Clayton. He declines to reveal the truth so that Jane will be marrying a noble.
