A young woman reads her great-grandmother’s diary. During the Civil War era, Martha loved Clark but was also courted by Paul. Clark and Paul go off to war; Clark is reported a prisoner of the Confederates. When the war ends, Paul returns and says Clark died. Paul resumes his courtship of Martha but she doesn’t like his gambling habit. Clark comes back: he was badly wounded and had given Paul a message for Martha, but his rival had lied. Margaret and Clark are wed.
