Love Diary #37
In "I Never Knew," a heartfelt 1965 Charlton romance, Ed and Cynthia’s ice skating outing takes a sudden turn when Janie Bass collapses, leading to a tense hospital visit and a quiet moment that stirs unexpected emotions. As Janie recovers, her presence draws attention from Ed, prompting Cynthia to reconsider her own self-image—only to be gently reminded by Ed that her natural beauty was never in question. Written by Joe Gill and illustrated by Joe Sinnott with inks by Vince Colletta Studio, the issue’s cover by Dick Giordano captures the quiet intensity of a moment that lingers beyond the page.

While Ed and Cynthia are ice skating, Janie Bass collapses. As they rush Janie to the hospital, Ed comments that they "can't let anyone so good and beautiful" die that way. After emergency surgery, Janie recovers and seems to receive plenty of attention from Ed. Noticing that Janie is thinner than she is, Cynthia goes on a diet. Ed notices and chastises Cynthia, saying she was more attractive before.
