“Never Love a Pilot!”

"Never Love a Pilot!" is a heartfelt 1950 romance from Love Diary #9, where Janet’s growing feelings for Hal, a quiet mechanic, collide with her deep-seated fear of test pilots—especially after her sister’s husband died in a crash. When her father’s new plane needs a pilot and Hal steps forward, the truth comes out: he’s been a test pilot all along, hiding his identity to win her trust. The story, illustrated with quiet intensity by Paul Parker and lettered by Ed Hamilton, captures a tender moment of choice and acceptance.

Janet blames a cowardly test pilot for crashing a new plane her father designed; her sister’s test pilot husband was also killed in a crash, another reason Janet dislikes that profession. Janet falls in love with Hal, an airplane mechanic. Her father builds a new plane but can’t find a pilot willing to test it. Hal reveals himself to be a test pilot; he pretended to be a mechanic because he knew Janet hated test pilots. Hal flies the plane successfully and Janet knows if she loves him she has to accept his dangerous profession.
