“No Right to His Kisses”

In "No Right to His Kisses," Valerie Barclay’s striking artwork brings to life a poignant 1953 tale of class, perception, and second chances. Barby, the seemingly flawless secretary admired by her boss Ordway, finds her carefully constructed world upended when new employee Tevis arrives—only to be drawn to her despite his initial disdain. As tensions rise and secrets surface, a fragile romance blooms, only to be tested by a painful revelation and a moment of unexpected compassion. The story unfolds with quiet emotional depth, grounded in the personal stakes of family, pride, and the quiet courage it takes to rebuild trust. Cover by Valerie Barclay.

Barby’s boss Ordway considers her the perfect secretary but new employee Tevis finds her “insufferable” in her “perfection.” He also suspects she’s trying to steal Ordway from his wife, Tevis’s sister. However, they fall in love and get engaged. Barby introduces him to her working-class sister Mae and Mae’s husband Jared, Barby’s ex-fiancé, but in such a way as to humiliate them. Tevis breaks up with her. When Mae falls ill, Barby nurses her and runs the household until she recovers. Tevis returns and they are reunited.
