“Not Free To Love Him”

In "Not Free To Love Him," Joan’s carefully constructed lie about a boyfriend named Jeffrey takes an unexpected turn when she hires a stranger to play the part—only to find herself truly falling for him. As the office outing unfolds, the tension between pretense and feeling grows, leading to a moment neither expected. The story unfolds with quiet emotional weight, drawn with expressive detail by Bill Fix, while the cover by Alice Kirkpatrick captures the bittersweet tension of the moment.

Joan pretends to have a boyfriend named “Jeffrey” to impress her co-workers, but they know it’s a lie. They arrange to have everyone and their boyfriends attend an office outing, so Joan will be embarrassed. Joan hires a man on the street to be her escort. He agrees, but says she has to “glamorize yourself.” Joan and Jeffrey fall in love on the outing. As they prepare to part, Jeffrey admits his name is really Jeffrey and he’s the son of a rich man. They decide to get married.
