“He Called Me Money Mad”

In "He Called Me Money Mad," Anita faces a surprising shift in her fiancé Eddy after his return from Officer Candidate School, as his priorities clash with her independence and their plans. Written by Charles Quinlan, this 1952 story captures a quiet moment of tension and growth in a wartime romance, where misunderstandings and changing expectations test a relationship. The cover by Charles Quinlan perfectly frames the emotional stakes of a love letter written not just to a man, but to a future that’s suddenly uncertain.

Anita is engaged to soldier Eddy, and agrees to wait to marry until he finishes Officer Candidate School. When Eddy returns, he says their wedding will have to be postponed a little longer until he saves up some money: he refuses to let her keep her job at the camp PX to help out after they’re married. Anita discovers Eddy has changed since he’s an officer, and has been dating the colonel’s daughter. The colonel straightens them out: his daughter is already engaged, and Eddy needs to get with the program. Eddy apologizes to Anita and they are reunited.
