"Tearful Deception" follows a woman who loves Ralph, a young man she believes is beneath her socially, but when a police officer visits seeking Ralph's whereabouts, Ralph goes into hiding—revealing he deserted from military service to see his dying mother one last time. The woman renews her faith in him after learning his true motivations. A second story depicts a man named Bill recounting to his girlfriend Judy how he met her years earlier while working on a paint formula project; they fell in love, but he left her to pursue his own career ambitions, and now, having achieved success, he hopes to rekindle their relationship and marry her.
Francesca Weber, a lonely young woman working as a secretary for the invalid Mrs. Lemoine, finds herself drawn to the charming and reckless Ralph, whose flirtations ignite a dangerous romance. As their secret encounters grow more intense, Francesca begins to question her judgment when Ralph takes her on a reckless joyride in Mrs. Lemoine’s car, leading to a terrifying crash and a cover-up that leaves her torn between loyalty and fear.
Judy Hall has long held a fixed, negative opinion of Bill Boardman, believing him to be reckless and charming only to women—until he arrives at her office after graduating college, challenging her assumptions with quiet sincerity. As they spend time together surveying painted buildings, Judy finds herself drawn to Bill’s thoughtful nature, even as she struggles to reconcile her preconceived notions with the person he truly is.
June and Ralph are engaged, but June grows increasingly jealous as Ralph’s plans—especially those involving his mother and a sudden shift to chemistry—seem to exclude her. When Ralph misses their college dance without explanation, June is furious, convinced he values others over their relationship, and confronts him at his home only to find it empty.
